A local shop has a Ted Williams lever action 30/30, I know these were made by Winchester for Sears, anyone have a cross reference for dating the Ted Williams rifles? This one has a serial number of V128649, looks to be a top eject. It is in excellent shape, would make a nice truck/hunting gun, would be really great if it shot cast lead good.
I really don't 'Need' another 30/30, I have a nice Pre-64 Model 94, and an 80's vintage Ranger filling the rough duty role right now. But, if I could get it for $200 or so and found it shot cast lead good, I'd be pleased.

The general concensus seems to be that there are no records available for the Sears serial numbers assigned to Winchester made firearms. The Sears ser#'s are of a separate series apart from those assigned to the Winchester brand name firearms. Either Sears never released the records,or Winchester agreed not to release them. The Cody Museum does not have them AFAIK. It's most likely a 70's/80's mfg '94 and well worth $200 for a shooter if in nice condition IMHO. About the only thing different in the 'house brand guns' apart from the markings on it was the use of a hard wood in the stocks instead of walnut, usually birch, then stained to look like walnut. Sometimes the sights are a bit different, perhaps the butt plate, etc.
Nothing major really. Sometimes they used walnut on these too. It is in excellent shape, maybe even unfired, definetely not cairried in the woods. It has the same type sights as my 1949 vintage Model 94, with five or more elevation steps. My 80's vintage Ranger has only three elevator steps on the rear sight. Thanks for the info on the serial number data.

And you are all correct, I must be crazy not to just go ahead and get it for the money. If it shoots cast lead good, it will be a real value. My tax bill has been what is slowing me down, I think I'll put a deposit on it and do a 30 day layaway.
I own that very shotgun, the model 21. I purchased a left hand safety for mine in about 1970 from a parts catalog for a High Standard that a friend had puchase.
I can't tell you though if the model 20 is the same. The 21 is a variable choke slide action. I have never had a problem with it. NNumrich Arms (www.gunpartscorp.com) has a cross reference section- its on the left side of their home page. You can look up a Sears or Western Auto or Montgomery Ward firearm model, and it will give you the maker, and corresponding model of that maker.
NSears Model 21 evolved from the model 20. Parts lists for comparing various Sears modesl are available at www.histandard.info. Answer Actually made by Winchester. NIf you go to Auctionarms.com you can have an appraisal, or get an idea of what it's worth.
NThis shotgun is a model 1400 made by Winchester for Sears&Roebuck. Sears model 300 Ted Williams semi auto 12 guage, 2 3/4' shells, The stocks are heavily checkered Delux walnut with a silver pomel, both sides and bottom of forearm are checkered. Also has Ted Williams signature recoil pad.
To buy it now on Auctionarms.com it was $235.00/ bidder was getting it for $189.00 nHope this helped someone, cause I was also looking for this info. In the summer of 2007 I bought one on auction for $180. I have seenthe asking price as high as $350. By the way the one I bought was excellent though it did have acouple of minor marks on the wood and metal but since I was lookingfor something to go hunting with and did not to worry aboutscratching it, the gun was perfect for me. I discovered the reasonwhy somebody probably traded it off; it shoots 12' at 2:00 at 50yards. Hard to bring home the venison when you're off that much.Buyer beware!
This gun was made for bird hunting. That's why it only holds three, two and three quarter in. Shells and has no plug! If you notice itis really light weight.
Perfect for swinging around for quickflying birds.

Any how, your TW 300 is a Winchester 1400 and was made from 1964 and 1968, your TW 200 is a Winchester 1200 and was sold by Sears, from 1964 until 1988, it is still in production. I can find neither model on the different serial number charts that are available to me., perhaps because they are modern firearms and not considered collectible such as the old Winchester Lever Actions and pre 64 models.
To meet Sears' price line both models used less expensive hard wood for the stocks and less finishing on both the external and internal metal. This is why they bring less that the parent models at sale time, they are still Winchesters except in finish and name. Hope that helps.
I appreciate the help so the TW300 was only made from 1964-68 that pretty much narrows that. The TW200 from what I have been reading around was made from like you stated 1964 until 1978 with Ted Williams name on it. Others state they sold about 82,000 a year so by that if true my two TW200's were made in 1967-68.
Which would match the story by the sellers which tie them to the mid sixties. But Stoney seemed to know how to date the TW's by barrel code which would be the first person I have run across with that level of expertise on TW's.

Click to expand. Stoney stated that there was no way for him to date Model 200s and 300s. But from information from many sites like this and tracking auctions, and stories of original owners who remembered the year of purchase I can pretty much get close on the TW200's, The ones I have with 295xxx & 296xxx are manufactured in 1967. One other thing I have learned is that the first year 1964 model barrel was inscribed with just a print type Ted Williams instead of a signature and maybe 1965. I will just keep watching auctions and learn.
I fact every item sold in the Sears Sports Department from 1964 until 1978 had the Ted Williams name on it from guns, ammo, to outboard motors to tackle boxes. Ted Williams was signed by Sears in 1962 to evaluate and test and improve all items procured by Sears at there huge testing warehouse.
